January’s Box – How Will You Arrange Yours?

Take care when handling cacti – those prickles are sharp!

Hello fellow club members!

Last week, I was most excited to open up the contents of my January box… and what did I find inside? A super-cute collection of mini succulents and cacti!

I have to admit, I’ve had such fun over the weekend trying out ways to plant them up and to show them off.

They arrive in the cutest little plant pots – but to avoid water damage to your surfaces, you’ll need a plant tray.

Save up your tops from used jars to make perfect small drip trays for mini cacti and succulent pots

For a nice cheap option, you could group them in some old jar tops – odd numbers are more aesthetically appealing – so this little group of 5 is just perfect!

Or treat yourself to a ceramic and bamboo trough, like this one – just the size for 3 little plants (although I possibly could’ve squeezed in 5 smaller ones).

For a contemporary feel – plant up a white ceramic trough with bamboo drip stand

I really like the mix of shapes and textured in this arrangement… And the mini pebbles add a nice finish… Once planted up, this one was promptly stolen by my husband to liven up his working from home desk 😉

I’d really wanted to try grouping several cacti together to form a ‘cacti garden’… I was hoping for a terrarium maybe in an old fish bowl but, since cacti and succulents prefer it dry to damp, I settled on making an open arrangement.

I just happened to have this cube glass vase – which proved just the right size for 4 little cacti! I layered it up with sand, cacti compost and the rest of the coloured pebbles I had (that’s trickier than it sounds!)

Look at the range of shapes and colours – I was really rather pleased with this… Although I do think it might have worked better as a group of 3… (I just couldn’t bear to leave the little stone-like cacti at the front without a home)…

But my favourite has to be this succulent tea-cup arrangement. The cup has sentimental value, so planting it up has now just doubled its appeal!

There’s simply a layer of garden grit at the bottom to aid drainage, the compost from 3 little pots and another layer of grit on top…
