Care Guide – April 2021: Trailing Begonia ‘Illumination Apricot Shades’

Begonia ‘Apricot Shades’ grow well in sun and shade, and its trailing habit makes it perfect for growing in pots and hanging baskets!

Sun or Shade (& Soil Type)

Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from strong winds – a cold frame is ideal.

Planting Info

Begonia plugs can be planted straight into containers and baskets but are best potted on first and grown on in warm, frost free conditions. Pot on for 2-4 weeks before planting.

Begonia plants can then be transplanted into their final container once they have increased in size.

When any risk of frost has passed, acclimatise begonia plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days.

Feed and water plants frequently throughout the growing season taking care not to over-water, as this will cause new begonia flower buds to drop.

For best results keep plants well watered and feed fortnightly with a high-potash fertiliser to prolong flowering.

Flowering Time:

Flowers from late May until the first frosts in Autumn. Not frost-hardy so keep protected until the last frost.

Top Tip:

You can remove the single female flowers to encourage more of the large double male flowers to be produced if you wish – although we like to leave them on for a fuller display.
